Honest comparison
WoodLife Atelier vs Mokana — what is the difference?
Mokana is one of the best-known Dutch furniture marketplaces for Indonesian hardwood, based in Hengelo. WoodLife Atelier comes from the same town and shares some suppliers. Yet we are two distinct propositions. Here is an honest breakdown so you do not have to guess.
Mokana is a broad-assortment marketplace where you pick the piece that fits. WoodLife Atelier is a curated collection where Khalifa Hammami personally selects every piece, photographs it in atelier light, and ships it with a 3D viewer + size selector + provenance certificate. Same origin, different experience.
1. What is Mokana?
Mokana Meubelen is a Dutch furniture importer and retailer with a large physical showroom in Hengelo (Twente) and an extensive webshop. They sell tables, chairs, cabinets, decor — a broad Indonesian hardwood furniture assortment. The catalogue has hundreds of products.
Positioning is practical and accessible: standard product photography on white background, pricing from low to mid-segment, NL delivery, a large showroom team in Hengelo. For customers who want to quickly pick a suar table from many options Mokana is an excellent choice.
2. What is WoodLife Atelier?
WoodLife Atelier is a newer, smaller atelier (founded in 2026 by Khalifa Hammami, legally under Mokana B.V.). The catalogue is intentionally ~24 carefully selected pieces — not hundreds. Every sculpture and table is personally selected by Khalifa from the Java workshop and re-photographed in our studio with dramatic warm-light shots.
We add tooling you cannot find elsewhere: a 3D viewer for every animal (generated from photos via Replicate Trellis), short hover videos on product cards, an atelier glossary explaining suarwood/teak/spider-leg/root-pedestal, and a B2B signup flow with VIES VAT verification for wholesale pricing. At product level you get 5 Q&A blocks per piece and a provenance certificate with the tree's location.
3. Which fits which customer?
Choose Mokana if you: want to compare a broad assortment, need fast delivery, want to walk through a physical showroom past dozens of tables in one day, or are looking for a table under EUR 1,500 (which we do not source).
Choose WoodLife Atelier if you: are looking for a specific statement piece for a design-led interior, value the story behind the piece (which tree, which artisan, which provenance), want to use the 3D viewer to check scale before deciding, or need a wholesale account for your interior design / hospitality / retail practice.
4. Are we different in origin?
Not fundamentally. Both work with Indonesian artisanal workshops on Java, both use plantation teak (Perhutani-traceable) and suar from agroforestry systems. We share suppliers with Mokana and with other Dutch import brands. The selection and presentation differ — not the origin.
The key difference: WoodLife Atelier is single-curator (Khalifa selects personally), Mokana is multi-buyer (larger team, broader net). Both models are legitimate. Which appeals to you depends on whether you prefer 'curated boutique' or 'broad marketplace'.

Vragen / Questions
- Are you a competitor of Mokana?
- Not really. Mokana operates as a broad marketplace for Indonesian hardwood furniture; WoodLife Atelier is a curated boutique with a different customer approach. We serve overlapping but not identical segments. Khalifa has Mokana B.V. as legal entity, but content-wise these are two separate propositions.
- Do you sell the same pieces?
- Some products come from the same Java workshops and look similar in spec. Our selection is narrower, our atelier photography and presentation differ markedly. The same lion can sit on Mokana under studio light and on us in an atelier shot with warm rim light — visually a different piece, physically the same object.
- Do I get a better price with you than at Mokana?
- Not necessarily. Our pricing is comparable to slightly higher because of extra photography, 3D viewer, certification, and small scale. What you pay for is a more curated experience, not bulk discount. For B2B customers with VIES-verified account you get 30% wholesale discount with us.
- Can I shop both?
- Of course. Many customers visit both Hengelo showrooms to compare breadth (Mokana) and curated selection (WoodLife). We will gladly point you to Mokana if you are looking for something not in our 24-piece selection.
- Who am I dealing with when buying from WoodLife Atelier?
- Khalifa Hammami personally. No sales team, no call centre. He answers your email or WhatsApp himself, arranges delivery in person, and if anything is wrong with the piece you hear directly from him. Small team, personal service.
