Our story

Soulful, monumental, hand-finished.

WoodLife Atelier is a Hengelo-based atelier working directly with master carvers on Java. We curate solid teak animals and suarwood live-edge tables for design-led homes that want something with soul, not something off a catalogue.

Why we started

Furniture should outlive us.

WoodLife Atelier started with a frustration: too much furniture is built to be replaced. We wanted to bring back the kind of pieces that age, that gain character, that pass down. Solid teak and suarwood do exactly that. The trees are decades old before they are touched. The pieces we carve from them carry that time forward.

The Java connection

Generations of carvers.

Our partners on Java are family ateliers where the craft has been passed down for generations. The senior carvers can read a block of teak the way a sculptor reads marble. They see the lion or the elephant inside the wood and remove what is not it. We visit regularly, we know the families, and we pay them directly.

How a piece is made

Weeks, not minutes.

A monumental teak lion takes 4 to 8 weeks of carving by hand. The wood is selected, dried, sketched, roughed out with chainsaw, then refined with chisel, gouge and rasp until the muscle and mane appear. Suarwood tables follow a different rhythm: each slab dries for months, gets stabilised, sanded by hand, finished with matte oil. We do not rush the wood, and we do not rush the makers.

What we promise

One of a kind, no compromises.

Every WoodLife piece is unique. No moulds, no reproductions, no shortcut materials. If you commission an animal it is made for your space, your light, your story. If you choose a piece from stock you are choosing a single object that will never exist twice.

Where we are

Hengelo, the Netherlands.

Our office sits in Hengelo, in the east of the Netherlands. From here we coordinate with Java, ship across Europe and welcome visitors by appointment. If you want to see the wood up close, smell the oil, feel the weight of a hand-carved gorilla in the room, that is where you come.
